Positive and Respectful Relationships

This month we are showcasing the importance of Positive and Respectful Relationships.

When we talk about positive and respectful relationships we are not just talking about children, but their families and community, as well as their educator.  Whilst much of the focus is on the children, we can use our observations of children to understand the health of the learning community that supports them.

When the communication is right you see a ten fold increase in the quality of opportunities and learning that is available.

Many people ask me about how to choose childcare.  Much of it will come down to first impressions.  You may feel 'This one is too chaotic' or 'this service feels too sterile', but once you have found a place that feels right you may like to reflect on your observations more deeply.

Some useful questions to ask when thinking about the right fit for your child.

  • Do children seem happy and supported.
  • Are they able to explore their individual and unique characteristics
  • Is there enough structure to ensure a variety of learning activities to include all children
  • Do the educator and children communicate in a positive and respectful manner.
  • Do children get to have ‘outside time’ everyday
  • Is the indoors environment full of natural light and well ventilated.
  • Are children provided with agency and opportunities to participate in decision making?

Please see the below video as an example of what is possible when the communication value is high.
